“Were you and Raina ever together?” I ask. Jax and I are carrying her things back to her car. The video shoot is still going, but Jax and I are both flagging after closing the night before and getting up so early to be here.

Jax stops and I can tell there’s something up. I’m not at all sure what it is, but I sure as hell wish I hadn’t asked now. I’m such an idiot. I turn to face her. Ready to be yelled at or get my heart broken.

She’s smiling. Not what I expected.

“No. Raina is straight. Not to mention neurotic, super insecure, a little controlling, and she loves karaoke. So, even if she wasn’t straight, there is no way we would survive each other if we had the inclination. Why do you ask?”

“No reason. What’s wrong with karaoke?” It doesn’t sound convincing to my own ears. Her smirk tells me it doesn’t convince her ears, either. “It’s just that you two are so…connected.”

“She’s my best friend.”

“I watched you work together. It was like you had invisible strings connected to each other. All you had to do was think something and she responded. It went both ways.”

“I’m sure you saw love there, too. And affection.”

“Yes.”

She steps closer. The box I carry is between us and she presses into it. She raises her hand to stroke the side of my face, and I lean into the warmth. Her hand slides down, over my jaw, fingers tracing a path down my neck, my collarbone, the skin above my heart, where it stops and she lays her hand there, pressing her heat right into me. “Did you see desire? Need? The fire that comes with wanting something so much you’d do just about anything to have it…have her?”

I shake my head because she’s effectively rendered my voice unavailable.

“Do you see it now?”

I swallow hard. Because I do.

She lowers the bag she carries in one hand to the ground beside her. She takes the box out of my hands and puts it down beside us. She slips out of her backpack and puts it on the box. All while holding my gaze in a grip so tight that I can’t break it if I wanted to. Two feet of space throbs between us. When her smile disappears and her lips part, it’s as if there are invisible strings connecting us and my body knows where it has to go. I move to her, and I can feel all of her desire, need, and fire.
